Sports Design & Branding Ossory Werewolves
Background
The Werewolves of Ossory, also known as the Faoladh or Laignech Fáelad shapeshifters, occupy a unique place in Irish mythology. Unlike the monstrous werewolves of American folklore, the Ossory werewolves were often seen as benevolent protectors. They could shapeshift into wolves at will and were renowned for guarding children, lost travelers,
and the wounded.
Laignech Fáelad, regarded as the leader of these werewolves and the king of Ossory, epitomized their noble qualities. In ancient Ireland, werewolves were said to wear lupine hairstyles and wolfskins, and they would “go wolfing”—embarking on raids in their wolf forms. This tradition highlights their dual role as both fierce warriors and compassionate guardians within their communities.
Today, Irish culture is rich with tradition and community, from its ancient legends to its modern pastimes. Rugby, for example, is a popular sport in Ireland, reflecting the country's enduring spirit of teamwork and resilience.
Main Objectives
-> Create a look that mixes the richness of Irish culture as well as modern sports design.
-> Allow for a source of curiosity for Ossory werewolves in the design. Communicate a sense of strength, ‘wolfing’, and toughness.
-> Be functional and consistent across all of the branding design applications.
Key thought: Ossory Werewolves and the culture behind it emphasize the toughness, strength, and grit in rugby's playstyles.
